Basic Molecular Biology Techniques and Data Analysis Training

TRAINING COURSE ON BASIC MOLECULAR BIOLOGY TECHNIQUES AND DATA ANALYSIS (June 24-28, 2019)

RATIONALE
The Training Course on Basic Molecular Biology Techniques and Data Analysis is designed to introduce basic concepts and skills to individuals from all scientific disciplines that have little or no previous experience in molecular biology. It also aims to further strengthen the research/teaching capability of personnel involved in the following: academe, molecular biology-related and/or biotechnological research, supervision, and other technical operations. This training course is organized by the Genetics and Molecular Biology Division of the Institute of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Baños.

This 5-day training course involves a combination of lectures, demonstrations, laboratory workshops and group activities/discussions. Hands-on activities comprise bulk of the course. The topics included are the following:

· Proper Handling of Micropipettors
· DNA Isolation
· DNA Quantification
· Agarose Gel Electrophoresis
· DNA Amplification
· Molecular Markers
· Online Molecular Biology Databases
· Primer Design
· Scoring of Marker-Data
· SSR Data Analysis
· DNA Sequence Analysis
· Overview on Molecular Phylogeny
· Phylogenetic Analysis

OBJECTIVES

The general objective of this training course is to provide the necessary skills in basic molecular biology techniques and data analysis.

At the end of this course, the participant should be able to:

· understand basic concepts of DNA isolation, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), molecular markers and molecular phylogeny
· perform DNA isolation, agarose gel electrophoresis, DNA quantification and DNA amplification
· design a primer
· analyze marker-data and sequence data

EXPECTED OUTPUTS

Participants of the training are expected to produce a short report of the data analyses obtained from DNA isolation and DNA amplification of SSR markers and gene-specific markers. Results of the data analyses will be further interpreted through group discussion/consultations.

The basic molecular biology training is every last week of June. For details, contact Ms. Mercado at sqmercado@up.edu.ph or at (+63) (049) 536-2893.
