Methods in Monitoring Biodiversity

Hosted by the Plant Biology Division. This one week course comprises of lecture, laboratory and visits to nearby hoya gardens for a fun-filled discussion and hands-on practical sessions on Hoya morphology, taxonomy, ecology, growth and development. Participants will be introduced to the study of leaf architecture which had been used to identify species as well, in the absence of flowers and other reproductive structures. Various plant-based growth media will be discussed with participants sharing their best practices. It is hoped that this course will address growth medium and taxonomic problems of confusing Hoya species known to gardeners and researchers alike and yet unresolved until this time.

Course Outcomes:

  1. identify current problems, trends and methods in Hoya botany and taxonomy
  2. resolve the identity problem of some confusing Hoya species using leaf architecture characters
  3. germinate Hoya propagules using various plant-based growing media
  4. network and collaborate with Hoya enthusiasts
