Wildlife Biology major

What is the Wildlife Biology major program all about?

The Wildlife Biology major focuses on the biology and conservation of vertebrate tetrapods (amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals).  This major program offers various courses that are taxon-based to train students on wildlife identification and on the field and laboratory techniques used for research. Other courses of the major program help integrate concepts on the inter-relationships of wildlife and the environment to better understand issues such as human-wildlife conflicts, zoonotic diseases, habitat degradation, etc.

What research topics can I work on?

Students may conduct research on the distribution and population, diet, toxins, reproductive biology, ecto- and endo-parasites, etc. of amphibians, reptiles, birds or mammals. Students may also conduct research on the wildlife assemblage of a specific area.

What are my possible career opportunities after graduating with this major field?

Because of the versatile nature of the Wildlife Biology curriculum, graduates can proceed to a wide array of professions.  Wildlife Biology graduates may study medicine and other allied fields.  Others can pursue a career in research, wildlife management or conservation and work for various institutes such as the government sector and non-government organizations.  They may also become environmental scientists for impacts assessment and monitoring studies.  Wildlife Biology graduates may also work for zoological parks, rescue and conservation centers.  In addition, the undergraduate program can prepare students towards obtaining a graduate degree and entering the academe as professors.
