Plant Biology major

What is the Plant Biology major program all about?

The Plant Biology as a major field in the B. S. Biology is part of the baccalaureate degree offering of the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS). This field of specialization is designed to develop students’ ability  to understand not only the basic principles of plant science (physiology, morpho-anatomy, systematics, phycology) but its applied aspects (in agriculture, forestry, food science, veterinary science, molecular biology and biotechnology). Such a holistic foundation in botany will enable a better appreciation of plants not only for their utilitarian value, but also for their being an integral, unique and vital component of various ecosystems.

What research topics can I work on?

Plant Biology Major students can work on both the basic and applied aspects of the plant sciences.  Our well equipped laboratories for plant biotechnology/ plant natural products, phycology and plant systematics will enhance the students’ skills for research.  Possibilities for collaborative work with other research centers and scientists may also be done.

What are my possible career opportunities after graduating with this major field?

Opportunities of graduates include teaching and/or research positions in the government and private sector, technical support to plant-based industries, plant science communicator/technical writer/media practitioner, and pursuance of further studies in the plant sciences, molecular biology, biotechnology, and medical fields.
